A fascinating study recently published in Nature Microbiology delves into how coffee impacts our gut microbiome, specifically increasing levels of Lawsonibacter asaccharolyticus. While this name may not roll off the tongue, it’s one bacterium that researchers believe contributes to coffee’s many health benefits.

How Coffee Impacts Your Gut Microbiome

The study revealed that coffee drinkers—whether consuming one cup or several—had up to eight times higher levels of L. asaccharolyticus compared to non-coffee drinkers. This beneficial bacterium may help metabolize coffee’s natural compounds, like polyphenols and quinic acid, which are thought to support gut health, reduce inflammation, and even lower the risk of chronic disease.

What’s more, these effects aren’t limited to caffeine. Both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee boosted gut bacteria levels in lab tests, showing that coffee is beneficial in almost any form.

    Can you explain the differences between the types of coffee? Like acidity levels, al natural contents and caffeine content. Stuff like that.

    We truly enjoyed watching your guest appearance on the Original Markz show 1/7/2025. Great to hear you share information regarding how after 15 minutes freshly brewed coffee does loose it’s flavor. Now my husband understands “why” I do not drink coffee that has been sitting.
